NEVER AGAIN !!!!!!

So todays project was to seal the new tank I have, you need to seal the inside or they leak.
Ok sounds fair enough.
7 hours it has taken so far and it isnt totally finished yet.
Once it is I will have to sand the whole tank down, acid etch primer it and then paint it.
I really dont think buying new tanks is a good idea as I never want to go through all of that again.
I probably could have got a good second hand tank for about what it cost me for the new one including the $115 it cost for the sealant kit.
Oh well, live and learn.

I hope once the tank is completely finished I feel better about it, I dont want to hate the tank like I do right now.

Quick update

Got the tank back today, pretty happy about that as there is a lot of work to do with it and I have been wanting to get started on it. I had to have the fuel tap outlet moved as it was hitting the frame. Now it should sit right once I prep and seal the inside of it and prep and paint the outside of it.

Also sent the fork tubes to Queensland to be re hard chromed and straightened.

Called the powder coater hoping the frame was ready but sadly he said toward the end of the week.

So today I spend most of the day in the garage working on Bad Sushi but I feel a little let down by the fact I dont have a lot to show for my efforts. I spent about 6 hours out there spraying clear coats of the now complete front fender, giving some new life to the front wheel and triple clamps.
I guess I really want to be putting it all back together rather than polishing bolts and painting parts.

Below 30 odd years of corrosion of the rotor bolts (after and before)
incase anyone cares I used a rubberised abrasive wheel followed by a mop, both on my bench grinder

(after) Front wheel

(Before) upper triple clamp

(After) upper triple clamp (including polished bolts)

I giess the next beautification jobs are, Rear Wheel and Headers (have ordered exhaust wrap buy my local auto shop is dragging their feet getting it in)

until next time

Bad Sushi update

One of the things I wanted to do with this project was have the tins sport some cool art that ties in with the  theme of the bike but I didnt want to get all silly and spend loads of money of air brushing as that wasn't the kind of look I wanted.
Well owning a Body Art studio has it's advantages as on hand I have a bunch of awesome tattooists that can draw the shit out of anything so I am getting them to do the art for me (I cant draw my way out of a wet paper bag)

So yesterday I brought in the front fender which I had asked Reece Dillion to do for me and in his spare time he busted these two cool pieces out.
All I have to do is now cover it with 4 million coats of statin clear and its good to go.

Not sure yet what will go on the tank or rear fender but my mind is open to ideas.

and here is a random pic of our kitten chilling in the bread box.

There are two more bikes in the garage

My HD Street Bob

My wifes Sporty

Cant wait for the project to be finished so I can add more photos

Bad Sushi continues

Things are still full steam ahead with the project, currently the frame, swingarm, fork lowers and battery box are at the powder coaters and should be done mid next week.

I've been working on making some of the parts more pretty by removing the corrosion from them and polishing them up a bit, very easy if you have the right stuff.

Feeling a little overwhelmed about the rebuild but it is something I have to tackle and over come.

New brake light

Biltwell Z bars

Pod filters

New headlight

Fresh engine black

Years of crud on the top of the carbys

all clean now

ready for powder coat

Front guard, had to slightly modify the rear hole for it to fit.
It's now ready for some artwork.

I will look forward to the next update here as that will be when the frame is back and the thing is ready for some reassembly.

Later

Well the stripping continued and I am not the proud owner of a large bunch of motorcycle parts :)

In the photo below you can see what has been stripped from the bike, never to go back on it.

I bought this rolling stool as I was getting sore from kneeling on the ground, best $90 spent ever !!!

Still pulling it apart

Simple things can get difficult if you dont know what you are doing (bear in mind I have no mechanical training and I am basically winging it ) Getting the forks off sucked.

Got a mate to come over to help lift the motor out, much easier with two people. Sure you could probably do it yourself but why risk injury or damage to the motor?
Bought these engine bolts to replace the rusty ones, even gave them an extra polish !!

Ready for chemical stripping and then its off to the powder coater

I had to take the tank to get the fuel tap hole moved as it was stopping the tank from sitting right.
All these little things pop up along the way to piss you off but what can you expect when you are making something totally different?

A comparison shot of the old vs new indicators. Pretty funny

On the left is a polished bolt, on the right a piece of crap

Motor mount brackets even get some love, will paint them up with heat proof paint.

Cant wait to get the frame back !!!!
Also took the forks to get new seals and it turns out the uppers are, how do I put this nicely????? Fucked. They are bent and some of the  chrome has come off so  I am looking for replacements right now.

Until next time :) Stay safe out there

Yesterday May 6th 2012 saw the start of the tear down, I spent a good 3-4 hours stripping back useless parts.

Aircleaner was a little dirty so I threw it away.....along with the airbox

airbox gone

Mock up of what it will kinda sorta look like once finished.
Of course the rear end subframe will be removed.

Gone the oversize head light

Got a bunch of parts coming from the UK including small headlight and mini indicators but have loads more to do before I start putting things back together.

Project "Bad Sushi"

So I have been thinking about doing a Jap bobber as a project for a while, something like the one in the pic below.

Well today I picked up an 82 Suzuki GSX1100 which will be the base of my project. Right now it looks like a complete pile of crap, its rusty, has big stupid looking indicators, a huge headlight visible from space and an ugly dash, just to name a few of her faults.
On the plus side, she has a solid motor that has been well looked after, excellent suspension front and rear and handles and corners beautifully.

As it progresses I will update this blog.
Cheers
